WILKES-BARRE – Four police officers, including one Army National Guardsman
who has been called to active duty, were promoted to sergeant Thursday at City
Hall. Three are school resource officers.

Robert Hughes, Kenneth Lukasavage and Matthew Stash received their new
hats, badges and pins in person, while Joseph Novak was congratulated over the
phone by Mayor Thomas McGroarty. Novak was calling from Fort Dix in New
Jersey, where he was preparing for deployment abroad.
The mayor called Stash, with nine years on the Wilkes-Barre force, an
“aggressive young officer” who has been active with the anti-crime car
patrols. Hughes, with 14 years local experience, is the head of the Police
Benevolent Association and a school resource officer at Bishop Hoban High
School. Lukasavage has been an officer for 16 years, 13 with Wilkes-Barre and
is a resource officer at GAR High School. Novak is resource officer at Meyers
High School. “I think it’s only fair he get promoted, too,” said McGroarty,
who is also a reservist.

Stash will become a platoon sergeant and the other three will complete the
school year as resource officers before being reassigned. New officers will be
trained to take over the positions this summer.

Promotions were based on test results and interviews.
