John B. Gould, 89, of Conyngham, died Friday at home.
   
Born July 29, 1913, in Mount Carmel, he was a son of the late Albert and
Catherine (Straw) Gould. He was president and chief executive officer of
Gould’s Supermarket Inc. and was owner of the Valley Plaza Shopping Center,
Sugarloaf Township. He also worked for Spaulding Bakeries, Genetti
Supermarkets, Gould’s IGA and was past president of the Pennsylvania Food
Merchants Association. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II,
in the infantry of the Third Marine Division, Company C, Third Battalion. He
was a member of Conyngham United Methodist Church, Hazleton, where he was past
president of the Administrative board and of the Hazleton Kiwanis. He served
as lieutenant governor of Division 14 of Pennsylvania. He was also a member of
the Valley Kiwanis Club, CAN-DO, Hazle Lodge 327, Conyngham Valley Civic
Organization and the Valley of Bloomsburg Consistory. He was past chairman of
the Salvation Army Advisory Board, past director of the Anthracite Boy Scout
Council and the Hazleton Community Chest.
    He was preceded in death by his brothers, the Rev. William, Albert;
sisters, Helen Strafford, Ida Goldsworthy, Myrtle Jacobs, Harriet Sklarslick,
Ethel Fritzinger and Catherine Donahue.
   
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, the former Ruth Henry; sons, John H.,
Shiloh, N.J.; Robert N., Punda Gorda, Fla.; daughter, Deborah Cara, Conyngham;
12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   
Military funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Mark S.
Harman Funeral Homes, Inc., 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums. Continued services
will be at 11 a.m. in Conyngham United Methodist Church. Interment will be in
Conyngham Union Cemetery.
   
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today.
