ADA, Ohio – King’s College wrestling standouts Mitch Marcks and Jim Morgan
finished just one win short of a national championship as both grapplers
placed second in the NCAA Division III National Tournament Saturday at Ohio
Northern University.
The Monarch duo became the first King’s wrestlers to reach an NCAA
championship match since Larry Danko placed second in 1990. Each wrestler also
earned all-American honors for the second consecutive year. Morgan was fourth
last season and Marcks placed eighth.

In the 125-pound final, the third-seeded Marcks lost 6-4 in double-overtime
to top-seeded Heath Ropp of Wartburg College of Iowa. Third-seeded Morgan then
suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of fifth-seeded Wil Kelly, also of
Wartburg.

Marcks held a 4-3 lead but Ropp escaped with 0:30 left in the final period
to tie the score. Neither wrestler scored in the first overtime period and,
after winning the mandatory coin flip at the end of the first overtime frame,
Ropp (32-2) chose bottom. The Wartburg standout reversed Marcks 17 seconds
into the period to claim the victory. Marcks concluded the season with a 36-2
record.

Morgan gave up a first-period takedown and second-period escape to fall
behind 3-0 entering the final period. Morgan scored on an escape in the third
period to cut the lead to 3-1, but with 0:10 left, the Monarch junior shot in
for a takedown and was countered by Kelly to take a 5-1 lead. A riding time
point would give Kelly (22-4) his final margin of victory. Morgan concluded
the year with a 38-2 record and saw his 35-match winning streak come to an
end.

Marcks reached the finals with a 7-6 victory over Cortland State’s Jason
Peck. In the 141-pound semis, Morgan downed Springfield’s second-seeded Keith
Polesky, 3-2.
