POTTSVILLE – The Bishop O’Reilly girls basketball team came close to
pulling off one of the biggest upsets Saturday afternoon, but District 11
champion Cardinal Brennan held on for a 41-40 victory in a PIAA Class A game
at Martz Hall.
District 2 runner-up O’Reilly ended its season at 18-9, but did triple its
win total from a season ago. The Queenswomen will return four starters next
season, including Janelle Zabresky. The sophomore center paced her team with
14 points. Molly Guntli, the lone senior starter, completed her career with 13
points. Freshman Erin Chesnavich added 13.
District 11 champion Brennan (24-5) came into the game fresh off a
semifinal upset of Pottsville Nativity, which had reached the Class A state
championship game the past four years. The Chargers, who also pulled off a
mild upset of Marian Catholic in the district finals, led 34-31 entering the
fourth quarter.
Kelly Joyce paced Brennan with 25 points. Colleen Cannon netted 11.
Brennan will play District 3 third seed Antietam (20-6) on Wednesday at a
site and time to be announced.
District 2’s other Class A entry, champion Forest City, routed District 3
fourth seed Mount Calvary 68-31 at Scranton High School.
