COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Wilkes star on academic team
Wilkes University senior center Whitney Bull, a Berwick High School
graduate, has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America College Division
Women’s Basketball first team as selected by the College Sports Information
Directors of America.
The College Division unit includes players from NCAA Division II and III
institutions from throughout the country. To be selected to the Academic
All-America team, a student-athlete must have previously been selected to her
District Academic All-America first team.
To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a
sophomore, and have an overall grade point average of 3.20 or better.
They must also be a starter or significant reserve on their team.
“This is one of the highest honors that you can receive in college
athletics,” Wilkes head coach Jim Reed said. “Whitney has proven herself to be
a great player, a great student, and a great leader. She certainly is an
outstanding representative of Wilkes University in many ways. We are very
proud of Whitney’s accomplishments both on and off the floor, and we are
thrilled that she has received this tremendous honor.”
Bull was named a Freedom Conference second team all-star during each of the
last two seasons. A finalist for the Jostens Trophy this year, which is
awarded to the top student-athlete in Division III, she averaged 16.5 points
and 13.5 rebounds this season for the Lady Colonels.
Bull ranked third nationally in rebounds per game, while topping the
Freedom Conference in the same category. She was also the conference’s
second-leading scorer. Bull concluded her four-year career with 1,219 points
and 984 rebounds.
Academically, Bull posted a perfect 4.00 grade point average while earning
a degree in accounting in just three and one-half years. She is currently
enrolled in the MBA program at Wilkes.
