DURYEA – A Williamsport man who had a 6-1/2-inch knife sewn into an inside
jacket pocket and machine gun ammunition in his car was arrested Sunday
evening after a traffic stop, police said.
Police said they spotted William Stanley Chase, 54, of Williamsport,
driving a car with an expired inspection sticker and illegally passing several
cars on Main Street.
Police said they tried to pull over the vehicle, but Chase turned off his
headlights and lead them on a chase through Duryea, Pittston and Hughestown.
Chase left his vehicle on a dead-end street and tried to flee on foot,
police said.
Officer Robert Evans pursued and eventually caught Chase in a wooded area
off Reynolds Street, police said.
Chase scuffled with the officer and broke free before being caught a second
time at his vehicle, police said.
While searching Chase, the officer found the knife, police said.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police found several boxes and
bags of ammunition for machine guns and rifles, a large number of razor blades
and drug paraphernalia, police said.
Officer Nick Lohman said an exact list of the items found in Chase’s car
was not available Monday. It was unclear Monday why Chase was carrying the
items.
Chase was arraigned on multiple charges including resisting arrest, simple
assault, harassment, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia,
possession of instruments of crime and numerous traffic violations.
He is being held at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of
$20,000 straight bail.
