THAT’S A GREAT article in the paper about the weather hampering the spring
sports seasons. Here’s a question. Are the athletic directors going to do the
proper thing and push the beginning of the season back so the coaches for
softball and baseball get their teams properly prepared, reduce the chance of
injury and especially with pitchers throwing outside and possibly get a good
look at the kids in their program? Just wondering if there are no exhibition
games and the kids can’t get outside, is it a healthy risk, is it a safety
factor? Let’s push the games back and get these kids the proper workouts.
Let’s do what’s best for the kids, ADs.

TO THE PERSON calling to congratulate Nanticoke on winning that district
title. I live in Nanticoke, and the talent that comes through that system, it
really should be no big deal. They should win this stuff every year and make a
deep run into the state playoffs like we did in the old days with the Casey
teams and the Guffrovich teams.
I READ JERRY Kellar’s column and was in total disbelief in what he wrote. I
think Paul Brown did what he had to do based on the fact of what the School
District was telling him and how he was supposed to coach these players. I
find it hard to believe that anyone can put Paul Brown down for what he did
based on that. Yet, he is hearing it from people who have never coached,
someone like Jerry Kellar and all these other people who have called in. I
think it’s about time that people step up to the plate and take on the role of
parenting and let the coach be the coach.

I WAS SADDENED no local newspapers picked up on a story legendary Nanticoke
hero Pete Gray passed away and his birthday was on March 6. I thought there
would be something in the paper. I think Nanticoke should really honor the
great baseball player, Pete Gray, by putting a statue in the park. That’s
where he used to sign autograph. My dad used to take me down there. It would
be so nice if we could put a statue in Nanticoke. Or the Red Barons could put
a monument out there in centerfield. That would be great. March 6 was his
birthday.

JOHN SLANEY, DENNIS Bonvie, Darcy Verot, Robert Dome and Martin Sonnenburg.
And now Frankie Leroux. Who’s next? I have an idea, the Patrick brothers. Get
rid of them, Pittsburgh, while we still have a chance.

THE FAN CALLING about Pocono Downs, I can see his problem is in his
reasoning. I think Pocono Downs, as a horseman, we’re trying to encourage
racing and encourage fans to come out whether it’s qualifiers or not. I think
they better get in touch with the guard and tell them you need the harness
license to go down on the backside, but you sure as hell don’t need it to
watch the qualifiers from inside the grandstands or down on the apron.
Somebody better talk to Pocono Downs quick. Pocono Downs, get on the ball.
We’re encouraging, and you’re discouraging.
