PITTSTON
    Police charge man

in beating, robbery

Police say a man hit his neighbor in the head, face and arm early Thursday,
then robbed him.

Edward Banul, 42, of East Columbus Avenue, was arrested on charges of
assault and robbery, Pittston police said.

Stephen Capozzi, 42, of East Columbus Avenue, was awakened about 1:33 a.m.
when Banul entered his room and began hitting him with a stick in the face and
head, police said. Capozzi was struck on his arm when he raised it to defend
himself. The suspect demanded money, and when Capozzi refused, Banul reached
into his pocket and took $70, then left, police said.

Capozzi identified Banul, who was arrested. He was arraigned before
District Justice John Hasay of Shickshinny and was placed on $50,000 bail. No
information on whether he made bail was available. His preliminary hearing is
set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday before District Justice Fred Pierantoni of
Pittston.

Prison inmate tries

twice to kill herself

An inmate at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility made her second
attempt at suicide in three days, authorities said.

The inmate, whose name a prison official would not release, was taken to
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and remained there Thursday night.

The woman, who was on a regular suicide watch on Tuesday, tried to hang
herself with her pants, said Lt. John Barry. After she was put on maximum
suicide watch, the woman tried again to hang herself with another pair of
pants on Thursday night, Barry said.

It was not clear where she got the pants because she was wearing a gown, he
said.

She was in the prison on drug charges, Barry said.
