IT SEEMS THAT all calls accusing some Democratic politicians of cowardice
are not printed. Could you by chance be a cowardly Democrat?

I HOPE THAT the Stubbs case is the last criminal case that Judge Olszewski
handles, because his conduct in this case is offensive to me and I think to a
lot of people I talk to. I just can’t understand why he is being allowed to
conduct himself in this way when the 11 jurors are sitting out there listening
to his tirades and who are going to judge this case and the other judges on
the bench allow him to do this. It is incomprehensible to me. God Bless the
district attorney.
Editor’s Note: The jurors are not present during pre-trial hearings.
Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Peter Paul Olszewski also
instructed jurors not to read the front sections of local newspapers or watch
the local news segments of local television broadcasts.

ONE OF YOUR headlines reads, “Proposed state budget slashes services to
needy.” When the Republicans were in, they always used the administration. It
should say, “Rendell Administration slashes services to needy.” Let’s get it
right and not be biased on our politics.

AS A CATHOLIC, I have attended many Protestant services and I noticed the
following: Protestants don’t seem to walk out of the service 3\4 of the way
through as some Catholics do after Holy Com munion. It seems to me Protestant
people for the most part have more respect for God in church than some
Catholics as I have observed during Mass.

I’M CALLING ABOUT the article you had about Harveys Lake attractions in
Sunday’s paper. It is nice to know that the Wintersteen family was recognized
for the fact that they had the park, but you also said that the rides were
sold in 1984. Not all the rides were sold in 1984, because the Wintersteen
family still has control of the carousel and it is now located in Florida.

Editor’s note: According to Shirley Hanson, the Wintersteens sold their
half of the park to the Hansons in 1935. But Mary Ann Wintersteen got to keep
the carousel. When the rest of the amusement park closed in 1984, Mary Ann
Wintersteen moved the carousel to Florida. It now sits in the International
Marketplace in Deland, Fla.

CONGRATULATIONS ON FINDING Casey Jones; he is a keeper. His columns are on
the mark. And Tuesday’s on Mayor McGroarty’s run for a fourth term is a gem.

THE RULING GROUP in Iraq is called the Baath Party. In view of the
thousands of murders and executions it has committed, I think the name should
more rightly be called the blood-bath party.

THE GREED AND control of the gas and oil industry is quite obvious. As of
today there is no shortage. I have not heard of one gas station closing
because of no gas to sell. The industry raises prices in anticipation of a
shortage yet to develop. This is nothing more than greed.

KUDOS TO THE Wilkes-Barre Area School Board for voting no on the Bear Creek
Charter School. Let those few hundred people know that the thousands of
taxpayers in Wilkes-Barre area, Plains, Wilkes-Barre Township, Wilkes-Barre
don’t want their tax money subsidizing an elite school. Voters should also
keep in mind that two directors, Smith and Luce, supported the few hundred
over the thousands of taxpayers. Vote them out.

I DID NOT vote for Rendell, but I congratulate Governor Rendell for cutting
the VISION money. Half of the people that we are dealing with here in VISION
are from New Jersey and New York and Philadelphia and every other place.

THE COUNTRY WANTS to change the name of French fries to freedom fries,
which is OK, I suppose. I have an idea that might work too. Since you eat them
with your fingers and France is giving us the finger, why not just call them
finger fries?

I JUST FINISHED reading Doonesbury on Wednesday and I think I got it.
Clinton was building up all these big surpluses every year so he’d have more
to spend. Well, he didn’t get to spend it. George Bush spent it. But what I
don’t understand is why didn’t he stop spending when the surpluses were used
up and start building surpluses for the next president?

WELL, HERE IT is again in March, there are still people in the Larksville
area that don’t have garbage stickers. We have to buy ours, some other people
don’t. Come on Larksville, get the borough council out there to check them
out.

THE ISRAELIS ARE killing Arabs and now America is going to war with Iraq
and we’ll be killing Arabs. How safe will America be?

FREEDOM OF SPEECH. One senator had to pass up majority leader because of an
insensitive remark, now one congressman is being asked to resign because he
stated Jewish Americans and Israel are forcing the war with Iraq. The only
Americans that will be able to have freedom of speech and can say anything
because of its sensitivity and everyone must listen will be black Americans
and Jewish Americans. The rest of us must remain silent.

Editor’s note: You’re making some pretty huge leaps in logic aren’t you?

AFTER LISTENING TO the many complaints of parents regarding too much
homework for their school children, perhaps it’s time to consider year-round
schooling, like many other civilized countries.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12TH, Letters to the Editor, “war opponents calling for
more weapons inspections six years too late” by Joseph Martin of Berwick. Well
done, Joseph.

NATURAL GAS PRICES are raising at an enormous rate and we have one person
to thank for that and that is the department of the government who requires
that all businesses stop using coal, stop using oil, so that they can have a
clean environment, so the Department of Environmental Protection is the reason
we are paying high prices for natural gas now.

I’M CALLING ABOUT the methadone clinic they keep writing in the paper
about, if it’s good medical sound advice, why don’t they open methadone
clinics in the local hospitals?

THE STUBBS CASE is a typical example of how the justice system has been
lost in this country. We now, instead of trying to find out whether a man is
innocent or guilty, look for a loophole to free him. This is the way our
country is going down the tubes.

ON THE PLYMOUTH officer who was charged with assault, how come he wasn’t
charged with cruelty to animals for kicking and throwing his wife’s puppy?
It’s not right for anybody else to do it, why should he get away with it? I
think he should be fined for that as well.

I CALLED YOU twice about the Wyoming Area Area School District and a
teacher …

Editor’s note: We deleted some of your charges because, despite trying, we
have been unable to get information. Unless charges are filed, schools, for
the most part, keep this kind of information from the public.

I SEE WHERE the paper disagrees with McGroarty re-running, which I don’t
blame them, but I can’t see where you give him all this publicity. Don’t cater
to his egotistic needs.

Editor’s note: When a candidate is also an incumbent, they have much easier
access to media coverage.

AFTER MY WIFE and I read the review on Connor’s Grill Room, we were
reassured of how small-minded and backwards the valley is. The review appeared
in the Taste Section of the newspaper, which headlined a gigantic picture of a
gigantic burger. The review starts by how the reviewer made a mistake; they
thought they were going for burgers, potato skins, wings, typical, as they
continued their review complaining of their dislike for fine gourmet food. My
wife and I have lived all over the country, including New Orleans, and
consider Connor’s a breath of fine air.

Editor’s note: You are certainly entitled to your opinion on our reviewer’s
opinion, but we reached a different conclusion after our reading: that the
reviewer was pleasantly surprised at Connor’s menu.

CLINTON AND GORE gave away our jobs to foreigners with NAFTA, Bush plans to
create jobs for Iraqis and pay them with our tax dollars. It appears as if
another Boston Tea Party is long overdue.

HOW ABOUT OUR new Governor Rendell rolling out his budget and now all the
Republicans are passing it and the Democrats are crying. Ed Rendell is
screwing Democrats and he forgot about Luzerne County people too with the
jobs. You’re off to a great start, governor.

I LOVE PAT Greenfield’s weekly food column. Her recipes are easy to follow
and always delicious. Her inside tips are a plus and the ingredients aren’t
hard to find. Keep up the good work, Pat.

THERE ARE CERTAIN people in Dallas – and the mayor is one of them – who
want to see Dallas turned into a city – bring in the developers and start
building. Well, I like Dallas the way it was and is, I think that the
small-town atmosphere is very nice. We have enough people, in fact, maybe too
many outsiders that have moved in but what can you do? The mayor got voted in
and it’s really too bad.

I JUST WANT to tell everybody that’s on Medicaid in Luzerne County that in
a couple of months you are all going to be put on an HMO. That means you’re
going to have to go to the doctor they tell you to go to. So the doctor you
are going to now may not be on the list, you’ll have to go to a new doctor.
That’s what this country is coming to: The poor people get screwed again.

BUSH CAN’T EVEN control the price of oil in this country. What’s he doing
for the Americans?

I WORKED IN Mackin School and it closed. I’m very, very proud to the Bear
Creek people that are trying to keep their school open.

IN RESPONSE TO the SAYSO caller regarding Mona Charen. He states he does
not know what kind of man Saddam Hussein is but he sounds more sophisticated
and smart than our dorky president. You may disagree with George Bush, but
this is an all-time low and a disgrace.

NEIGHBORS OF THE General Hospital are not nasty, they are frustrated. Most
do not have driveways and are forced to park on the streets. The city
initiated permit parking to alleviate the problem, however, visitors,
outpatients and staffers repeatedly ignore these signs. The hospital provides
a parkade and parking lot exclusively for visitors and staff. Why don’t they
use them? Residents are forced to park blocks away from their residences in
all weather conditions. A simple task such as carrying groceries becomes a
nightmare.

I’D LIKE TO thank the Times Leader for its fair and accurate reporting of
the incident at Harveys Lake. Unlike the other paper that blew the incident
out of proportion, there was no crime or corruption, but a human error, but
the other paper tried to create a story and came up empty.

I’M HAPPY THE soldiers returning are going to be saluted with a parade. My
husband, now deceased, served over three years In World War II in the Pacific.
When he came back to the states, the ships could not land on the West Coast
due to a strike. The soldiers were then sent by train through Canada. When
they arrived at stops along the way in Canada, they were welcomed home by
groups of Canadians at the depots with coffee, bands and banners. My husband
never forgot how great that was. When he got to New York City, I was the only
one to greet him and am happy to say that he was very happy about that.

AS WE APPROACH the Stubbs trial, I believe we should all say a prayer for
our district attorney, David Lupas, who is obviously battling the forces of
evil in Henry Stubbs, Attorney Al Flora and Judge Olszewski. Good luck,
Attorney Lupas, in a very difficult trial that you are confronted with, with
this triple force against you.

THERE IS ONE thing that I sure would love to see at the First Union Arena
when there’s concerts: have the stage in the center and even if they could
have it rotating, this way everybody has wonderful seats. Arena, please think
about this.

PLEASE, IF THIS war does happen and it is going to be an unwanted war by
most Americans, please everybody out there remember that the soldiers fighting
in this war aren’t there because they want to be, they are there because the
country told them to be. Please don’t abandon them like you did in Vietnam.
The worst thing in the world is to watch your buddies die and then have
somebody at home call you a baby killer.

I’M CALLING AS an alumni of Seton Catholic High School in Pittston and I
would like this question posed to the administration and school officials. We
are constantly contributing to this alumni association and what I would like
to know as an alumni and as a parent who has a child going there to school,
what are they doing with this money?

I HOPE THE mayor isn’t depending on what the silent majority thinks of him
to get him a victory as mayor. I personally know that lady that’s hugging him
in the picture and she …

Editor’s note: We cut you off because we don’t think you should speak for
this woman and we’re not sure whether you’re the mayor’s political enemy.

TO THE TEACHER that called in about going for a master’s degree and saying
it is a want of more education, not a sign of greed. Bull. Your 30-credit
basket-weaving master’s degrees are a joke. I am taking a psychology master’s
at Marywood, my master’s degree is 48 credits plus a thesis, I challenge any
one of you teachers to go out and take my master’s program.
