Shirley Morio Vitanovec has announced her Democratic candidacy for a second
term on the Wilkes-Barre City Council. A lifelong resident of the city, she is
active in numerous church and civic organizations. She serves on the city’s
Industrial and Economic Development Authority, volunteers for the United Way
Children’s Program and served as a committeewoman for Ward 15 District 2 for
many years. She is a member of the North End Slovak Club and the Downtown
Residents Association.
   
“Public officials should listen and make themselves available to all
residents, especially senior citizens, youth and veterans,” she says in her
press release. She said she will continue to push for police protection and
downtown lighting.
    Vitanovec says she “firmly supports and encourages solidarity to unions.”
She and her husband, George, president of Teamsters Union Local 401, have two
children and twin grandsons.
