SALISBURY, Md. – The Wilkes University softball team rebounded from a pair
of losses on Friday to score two victories Saturday at the Sea Gull Classic
hosted by Salisbury State University.
Wilkes (4-3) posted a 5-1 win over Wesley College in game one. In the
nightcap, the Lady Colonels scored a 5-2 victory over Bates College.
Jen Trate tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead Wilkes past Wesley.
Trate, who did not give up a hit in the last five innings of the contest,
struck out seven and walked none. The lone run she allowed was unearned.
The Lady Colonels put the game away with three runs in the sixth. Brooke
Shreaves belted a two-run homer, and Alexis Petite – the lone batter with two
hits in the game – followed with a solo shot to extend the gap to 5-0.
Maryellen Korty allowed only seven hits and one earned run to pitch Wilkes
over Bates. Korty struck out three and walked one.
Karly Streznetcky got the Lady Colonels on the board with a solo homer in
the second inning. She then stepped to the plate in the third inning with the
bases loaded and smacked a two-run double.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Elizabethtown 21, Wilkes 8
ELIZABETHTOWN – The Wilkes University women’s lacrosse squad traveled to
Elizabethtown and dropped a decision in their first-ever varsity competition.
The Lady Colonels fell behind 11-2 at intermission against Elizabethtown.
In the final half Wilkes scored six goals but it was unable to stop the Blue
Jays attack, as they had 10 second-half goals.
Maria Currier and Kathryn Currier had two goals apiece to lead the Lady
Colonels. Kyla Campbell, Danielle McDonald, Alicia Connor and Sara Ciotoli
each scored once.
Wilkes used two goalkeepers, with Carissa Lyons stopping seven shots in the
first half and Cassie Malone had four saves in the second half
Neumann 11, Misericordia 10
SCRANTON – Britney Haring and Erica Noel each scored three goals in a
losing cause for the Lady Cougars, with Haring also recording an assist. Jill
Berlanda added two goals for Misericordia, and Liz Kovalchik had 10 saves in
goal.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Misericordia 8, Shenandoah 7
SCRANTON – Nick Sisca scored the game-winning goal in overtime off an
assist from Matt Rowland for the Cougars (1-2).
Matt Carey led Misericordia with three goals and an assist, Rowland
contributed two goals and two assists, and goalie Chris Brauch recorded 17
saves.
