Joseph E. Philbin, 79, of Scranton, died Friday in Mercy Hospital,
Scranton.
   
Born June 26, 1923, in Scranton, he was a son of the late James Patrick and
Mary (Maher) Philbin. He graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School
and the University of Scranton, Wharton School of Finance. He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II, where he served as a fifth grade technician
with the 67 Medical Supply Depot and earned the Good Conduct and Victory
medals. He was self employed and was also owner of the family business. He was
a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Scranton.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Josephine Phelps.
   
Surviving are his daughters, Kathleen, with whom he resided; Maureen
Gibbons, Scranton; sons, Joseph, Fairmont Township; Thomas, Archibald; five
grandchildren; brothers, John (Jack), Fairfield, Conn.; Robert, Silver Spring,
Md.; Jack William and James, both of Scranton; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
   
Funeral services will be at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday from the Durkan-Cuff-Kearney
Funeral Home, 125 N. Main Ave., West Scranton, with a Mass of Christian Burial
at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be
in Cathedral Cemetery.
