ATV riders suspected
in vehicle fire
Firefighters battled a stubborn vehicle fire involving a full-size
abandoned van filled with tires Sunday night. The van, which was parked on a
vacant lot off Center Street, was allegedly set ablaze by a group riding ATVs
in the area, said Hughestown Fire Chief Jamie Merlino.
“We had a witness call 911 to say he saw individuals in tan jump suits
riding quads set the vehicle on fire,” said Merlino, who added it appears
some type of accelerant, possibly gasoline, was used. “Our police and Duryea
police were chasing them, but I don’t know what their results were.”
Calls to Hughestown and Duryea police were not immediately returned Sunday
night. No further information was available.
