Pioneers re-sign top receiver

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers re-signed their leading receiver from
last year as well as another holdover from their inaugural arenafootball2
season.

Aman Abye inked another one-year deal with the Pioneers, the league
announced on Friday. The wide receiver/defensive back led
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in receptions (65) and receiving yards (747) and was
third in scoring with 80 points. He also led the team in all-purpose yards
(1,380) and kick returns (36 for 544 yards). He was the team’s fourth-leading
tackler on defense, with 33, and made three interceptions.

Also signed on Friday was lineman Markevius Woods. Just last month, Woods
was asked to be let out of his contract to pursue opportunities in the af2’s
parent league, the Arena Football League. Things didn’t work out, however, and
Woods, who previously played in the National Indoor Football League, was
welcomed back to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Woods made three tackles in five games
during an injury-plagued 2002 season.

All other Pioneers from last year’s team who haven’t re-signed with the
team officially became free agents after midnight Friday night, when all af2
players’ one-year contracts expire. The team now has 26 players signed for its
upcoming training camp, which begins Wednesday. The Pioneers can bring 35
players to camp and 21 will make the opening-day roster.
