MAYOR LEADS CLEANUP ON BARNEY STREET WILKES-BARRE RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION
AS HARD AS EVER, MAYOR TOM MCGROARTY DIRECTED CITY WORKERS TO HAUL JUNK
TUESDAY FROM SOME CONDEMNED BARNEY STREET PROPERTIES. WILKES-BARRE – Coal
Street will be resurfaced by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
starting Wednesday, city officials said.
The new pavement is an interim measure until the road is completely
rebuilt, realigned and extended to North Pennsylvania Avenue – something that
has been promised for years.The properties, at 51-53 and 55 Barney St., are
owned by Victor Cruz of 26 Pine Ridge Drive. They were condemned Feb. 20 after
two men were arrested there and charged with drug possession.
“If you don’t clean up your messes, we will do it and force you to pay,”
McGroarty said in a written statement.
Mayor Tom McGroarty has been on the scene Tuesday night and Wednesday,
“helping” construction workers.
