The tragic death of Canadian soldiers as the result of American friendly
fire requires full investigation and punishment of those who are responsible.
This tragedy raises questions beyond who is criminally responsible for the
deaths of the Canadians.
1. The pilots, Major Schmidt and Major Umbach are members of the Illinois
Guard and therefore are only part-time pilots. Is it possible that part-time
pilots can be as well prepared as full-time pilots?
2. The use of amphetamines (go pills) while a pilot is in combat mode
constitutes a danger to the pilot and others. Should our government sanction
the drugging of our pilots in order to enhance their performance?
3. Should enlisted personnel be penalized for violation of the
zero-tolerance drug policy when the Air Force itself ignores the policy?
These are questions which should be addressed by an independent agency,
which is no way connected with the Air Force.
