Bethany Fehlinger/CoughlinThe Journal, Coughlin’s newspaper, is in its
110th year of continuous production, making it the longest continuously
published high school newspaper in the United States. Diligent work,
creativity and commitment on the part of staff members, editors and advisers
contribute to this part of the illustrious history of high school journalism.
The Journals from the past are different from today’s production. For
instance, gossip columns, jokes, who’s who at Coughlin are all found in the
archives. The interests of today’s reading audiences have changed. Taking the
place of the fun columns are articles about 9-11, the possible war and, of
course, extracurricular activities.
This year, senior Kristen Zurek is doing an outstanding job as editor in
chief and led The Journal’s staff in publishing four interesting and creative
editions. Her plans call for at least three more issues before the end of the
school year.
Mrs. Mary Ellen Blazejewski, Journal adviser, said she is very pleased with
the work of this year’s editors and staff. She adds that a big advantage in
increasing the number of issues published each year is the fact the Mr.
Hampel’s visual communications class duplicates the 1,100 copies of most
issues.
Due to inclement weather, the dates of some activities have been changed.
The March 6 snowstorm postponed the parent-teacher conferences to today. This
caused a problem because Almost Anything Goes was scheduled for tonight and
some of the faculty members are participating in this event. So, the Almost
Anything Goes was held Tuesday.
The annual blood drive will be held tomorrow at Coughlin. This is one of
the most important efforts of the year. It will be held in the school
gymnasium, and students who would like to donate must be at least 17, weigh at
least 105 pounds and have no serious health problems. Sign-up sheets are
available in each homeroom.
Bethany Fehlinger is a junior at Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.
