    Sgt. Ned E. Walsh III, son of Jim and Beth Gruver, Harveys Lake, is serving
with the U.S. Army in the Mideast in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
   
Walsh, a graduate of Lake-Lehman High School, is the grandson of Shirley
Sayre, Hunlock Creek. He started his military career in Fort Bragg, N.C., as a
member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He transferred to Fort Eustis, Va.,
where he is a member of the 24th Transportation Battalion. He works on
vessels called Mike boats that are 73 feet long and capable of carrying 60
tons of cargo. The boats are used to carry troops or cargo for short-distance
missions. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Expert Infantry Badge and
is coxswain on his boat.
   
He and his wife, Heather, and their three children reside in Virginia.
