Woodrow W. “Woody” Metzger, 82, of East End section of Wilkes-Barre, died
Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Frederick and Mary (Cullis)
Metzger. He attended Coughlin High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World
War II, serving in the Pacific aboard the carrier USS Hornet. He received the
American Area Service, the Asiatic Pacific Area Service and the Philippine
Liberation Ribbons. He owned and operated Woody Metzger’s Coal and Ash
Hauling, Wilkes-Barre for several years and was employed by H.A. Whiteman Co.,
Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of the East End Primitive Methodist Church,
Wilkes-Barre and its Sunday School basketball team, the Good Fellowship Bible
Class and the Couples Club of the church. He was a member of Sampson World War
II Veterans Inc. and American Legion Post 132, Wilkes-Barre. He was a member
of the East End Athletic Association and coached Little League and teener
league baseball. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 401, Wilkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 55 years, the former Helen Manchio,
are sons, Woody F., Effort; Joseph J., Pocono Lake;daughter, Diane Boesche,
Wilkes-Barre; sister, Ruth E. Metzger, Plains Township; nine grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the Denison Cemetery
Chapel, Swoyersville, with the Rev. Marty Garms, officiating. Interment will
be in Denison Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund,
East End Primitive Methodist Church, 79 Laurel St., Wilkes-Barre.
Arrangements are by the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., Wilkes-Barre.
