PITTSTON – City Council at its monthly meeting Wednesday night continued
with efforts revitalize the downtown.
The council unanimously passed a resolution to apply for a Pennsylvania
Housing Finance Agency grant for the Main Street Revitalization Project, which
will be implemented by the city’s Redevelopment Authority.
Mayor Mike Lombardo said the city is hoping to receive between $750,000 and
$1.9 million for funding a number of city projects.
One project revealed by Lombardo was the Lincoln Heights project, which
will convert the old high school on William Street into a 28 unit senior
living facility. Lombardo said the cost of the renovations will be
approximately $3.4 million.
“It stabs me in the heart when people think the renaissance is dead,”
said Lombardo. “It’s just going to take a little time.”
Additionally, City Council passed a resolution allowing representatives
from Municipal Energy Managers Inc. of Throop to survey the city’s street
lighting.
Lombardo said the survey would determine what parts of the city need better
lighting and which ones have too much lighting, or light pollution.
“We would make lighting more efficient,” he said. “By using white light
instead of the yellow and eliminating light pollution.”
