As part of nearly $42 million in federal recovery funding coming to Pennsylvania for the poor, Luzerne County is slated to receive more than $1 million, Gov. Ed Rendell announced on Monday.
The funding from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will go to 44 community-based agencies to create economic opportunities and provide assistance to struggling Pennsylvanians, he said.
The Commission on Economic Opportunity of Luzerne County is slated to receive $1,151,078. A representative from CEO couldn’t be reached to provide further information on the organization’s plans for the money, but it will be administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development to provide economic opportunities for the newly unemployed and under-employed, as well as emergency food, housing and health services for people who have been adversely affected by the recession.
The agencies will be required to submit detailed work plans and budgets, which will be reviewed by DCED to ensure compliance.
The funding was distributed based on straight percentage increases to the regular Community Services Block Grant formula allocations.
