Sophie A. Gawlas, 86, of Fort Street, Forty Fort, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, August 2, 2009, at ManorCare Health Services, Kingston, where she had been a guest for the past month.
Her loving husband is Edward A. Gawlas. Together, Edward and Sophie celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on July 6, 2009.
Born on May 11, 1923, in Wyoming, Sophie was a daughter of the late George and Mary Mehalchick. She attended Wyoming schools.
A homemaker most of her life, Sophie dedicated her life to caring for her beloved family.
A devout Catholic, Sophie was a member of Holy Name/Saint Mary’s Parish Community, Swoyersville.
A woman of many talents and enjoyments, Sophie greatly enjoyed cooking for her family, cleaning her home and quilting many different things for her family and friends.
Sophie will forever be remembered as a loving, caring and generous wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Sophie will forever be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Sophie was also preceded in death by her brothers, George Mehalchick, Leonard Mehalchick and Joseph Mehalchick.
In addition to her loving husband of 63 years, Edward, Sophie is also survived by her son, Edward J. Gawlas Sr., Margate, Fla.; grandson Edward J. Gawlas Jr. and his wife, Colleen, Pottstown; granddaughters Kristina Gawlas, Dallas, and Valorie Gawlas, Newport News, Va.; great-granddaughter Emma Gawlas, Pottstown; sisters Della Polinsky, Forty Fort, and Marion Krolick, Wyoming; numerous nieces, nephews and friends

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, which will be conducted on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at 10 a.m. from the Wroblewski Funeral Home Inc., 1442 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Name/Saint Mary’s Church, 283 Shoemaker St., Swoyersville, with the Reverend William J. Karle, her pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, West Wyoming.
Family and friends may call Thursday, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
