John R. Zurek, 76, of Suscon Road, Pittston Township, passed away after a brief illness Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born June 20, 1933, John was a son of the late Stanley and Anna (Kluck) Zurek. John was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Greenwood. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was employed by Tobyhanna Army Depot of 30 years.
He was also a member of the Lone Cabin sportsman’s club and a social member of the West Side Social Club, Avoca.
John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.
John will be sadly missed by his wife of 26 years, the former Geraldine Kolojeski; son Stanley and his wife, Lisa Zurek; daughter Maryann and her husband, Joe Ascani; stepchildren Donna Melvin and her husband, Terry; Stephen Healey and wife, Brenda; Gary Healey; and Joseph Healey and wife, Allison.
Surviving siblings are Stella Vajda; Helen Pitz; Mary Kaub; Stanley, Henry and Chester Zurek; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Frank and Anthony Twardowski, and Edward and Robert Zurek.
A memorial Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s of Greenwood Church, 3335 Greenwood Ave., Moosic. Fr. Jeffery Walsh will officiate. Friends may call Thursday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Kiesinger Funeral Services, 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.
