Marian Nelson, 85, of Plains, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon from injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident in Wilkes-Barre.
She was born in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Stewart F. and Mamie Hungarter Christman. Marian was a graduate of Meyers High School, Class of 1941, and graduated from Wilkes-Barre Business College in 1943 and the Wyoming Valley School of Nursing with a Registered Nursing degree.
She became a nursing supervisor for the Veterans’ Medical Center, Plains Township, leaving there in 1959, and worked as a private duty nurse until her retirement.
She was a member of the Albright United Methodist Church and the Private Duty Nurses Association.
Marian loved her gardening, fishing, boating, water skiing and ice cream.
Marian enjoyed her last day, Sunday, at her cottage in Eatonville, fishing, boating and picnicking with her family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Howard, on March 7, 2008; sister Jeanne Abrant and two baby brothers.
Surviving are her daughter, Lisa Barrett, and her husband, Patrick, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren Shari Barrett and her companion, Robert Shreve; Patrick Barrett, Kelsie Barrett, all of Wilkes-Barre; great-grandchildren Kylie and Robert Shreve, all of Wilkes-Barre; and many nieces and nephews.
Marian’s funeral will be conducted Thursday from Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark Street, Plains, with services at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Patrice H. Goodwin, pastor of Albright United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.
