William A. Carey, of South Main Street, Pittston, died Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township. Bill went to meet his Lord after lengthy illness.
He was a loving husband to the former Barbara Bubul and a beloved father, grandfather and uncle.
Born in Pittston on March 24, 1931, he was a son of the late William and Helen Van Leuvan Carey Sr.
He was a graduate of Pittston High School, Class of 1949. Employed in the Food Industry over a span of 45 years, he worked for the A&P Tea Co. and Fetch’s Foods.
Bill was a four-year Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Wyandott. He was extremely proud to serve with Admiral Byrd on the “Operation Deep Freeze,” a mission which has since become a part of history. He was a member of VFW Post 1227, Duryea, and the American Legion Post 0558. He was a life member of the Disabled American Vets, Chapter 46.
A devout Catholic, Bill was a former active member of St. Casimir’s Parish and a current member of St. John the Evangelist Parish Community. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and served as a church usher for many years.
Bill led a very active life with the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of John F. Kennedy Pittston Council 372, where he served as Grand Knight for two years.
He was Faithful Navigator to the 4th Degree for two years. He also served as a District Deputy of the K of C.
He had the distinct honor of being elected as a representative to the K of C National Convention, which was held in Minneapolis, Minn. He was inducted into the Chaplet of Four Chaplins. He was a member of the Knights Choir and the K of C Bowling League.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Carey; and sisters Betty Dessoye and Joan Chudoba; and grandson Zachary Decker.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara; son Frank and his wife, Lisa Carey, Dunmore; daughter Patricia Psaila and John Simyan, and his daughters, Kaitlyn, Pittston; Jean Decker and husband Scott, Pittston; grandchildren Ryan and Emily Carey; Justin, Nicole and Brianna Psaila, and Faith Ann Decker; many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Kizis-Lokuta Funeral Home, 134 Church St., Pittston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston. Friends may call on Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
