LUZERNE – The Luzerne Borough Sewer Authority will meet on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Luzerne Borough Building, 144 Academy St.
• Borough offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 8 a.m.
KINGSTON – The borough of Kingston’s administrative offices will close on Monday, Sept. 7 for the Labor Day holiday. The offices will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 8:30 a.m. There will be no collection of recyclables on Monday. Residents in Zone 1 should place commingled and paper and residents of Zone 2 should place paper curbside for pick up on Monday, Sept. 14.
EXETER – The Exeter Borough Quasquicentennial Committee will hold another townwide yard sale on Sept. 12.
There will be a $5 fee to get your name on the list, which will be available at some of the local businesses. An ad will also be placed in the garage sale section of the local newspapers advertising section.
Anyone interested can contact Lynda at 654-3001, ext. 2, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over 50 families participated in the sale in July.
• Residents are reminded that there is a three-bag limit for garbage in the borough. It is not a three-can limit. Garbage weighing more than 30 pounds will not be picked up. If you have extra garbage, you can purchase a sticker for $2 per bag. Bulk items require a $15 sticker per item.
COURTDALE – CAPTAX (Citizens Against Property Taxes) will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Courtdale Municipal Building.
CAPTAX officers will present a list of additional taxes being proposed on some services rather than reducing spending to fit the budget.
The public will be invited to a five-county regional meeting on Sept 24th at Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Kingston, announced last week that a state recycling performance grant has been awarded to Forty Fort.
The grant was awarded by the state Department of Environmental Protection based on the municipalities population and recycling rate. The grant announced is based on recycling efforts for the 2007 calendar year, for which Forty Fort is being awarded $4,936 for recycling 343 tons of material.
SYBERTSVILLE – The Sybertsville Post Office will commemorate Sugarloaf Township’s Bicentennial with a pictorial postmark next month.
The postmark, designed by Lisa Welch, features an image of the Sugarloaf mountains.
Postal clerks will hand cancel stamped letters and postcards with the postmark from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Customers can get a postmark at a temporary postal station set up at Larock Sports Complex in Sugarloaf Township.
Those who cannot attend the event but would like to get the postmark may submit a mail order request no later than 30 days after Saturday.
All requests must include a stamped envelope or postcard bearing at least the minimum first-class mail postage.
Customers wishing to obtain a postmark should affix stamps to any envelope or postcard of their choice, address the envelope or postcard to themselves or others, insert a card or postcard to themselves or others, insert a card or postcard thickness in envelopes for sturdiness and tuck in the flap.
Place envelope in a larger envelope and mail to Postmaster, Sybertsville Post Office, 41 N. Main St., Sybertsville, PA 18251.
WEST PITTSTON – Due to the state’s budget impasse, the Governor’s Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center in West Pittston will be forced to make operating changes.
Effective Monday, Aug. 17, all outreach visits were canceled. The West Pittston office will be open on a limited basis. For more information, call 1-800-432-9735 or 654-9589.
ASHLEY – The borough tax office reminds residents the 2009 school tax rebate period ends Thursday, Sept. 10. Any payments received after Sept. 10 will be due at the face amount.
Property owners approved for homestead have the option to make payments via three installments. The first installment payment is due by Sept. 10. If the first payment is not made by then, the third installment option is forfeited and the school tax must be paid in full.
Office hours for the remainder of the school tax rebate period is Mondays, 4 to 6 p.m.; Fridays, 4 to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The tax office will not be open on Thursday, Sept. 10 but will accept rebate payments and first installment payments Sept. 11.
Office hours during the face period will be Monday, 4 to 6 p.m., and Fridays, 4 to 6 p.m. The office hours are also listed on the tax bill. Anyone who has not received their taxes should contact the tax office immediately at 825-0354.
WARRIOR RUN – Tax collector Mary Ann Brodginski reminds residents that the end of the rebate period for the 2009 Hanover Area School District taxes is Sept. 10. After this date, the taxes will be in face period until Nov. 9.
After the rebate period, office hours are by appointment only by calling 825-4043. The county/borough taxes are in penalty and can be paid at the tax office until Dec. 30. The tax office will be closed the week of Sept. 19 to 26.
AVOCA – Avoca yard waste will be collected on Tuesdays, Sept. 1 and 15.
The following separated items will be collected: grass clippings; leaves; yard wastes including, shrubs, hedge clippings, tree limbs not exceeding 3 feet in length and ? inch in diameter. There is a minimum of three open containers not to exceed 30 pounds.
Place containers at curbside by 8 a.m. The recycling center will not accept grass and leaves that are combined with yard waste.
Waste Management will collect three household items for each Avoca Borough household displaying a valid 2009 garbage sticker.
Place items at curbside on Thursday evening, Sept. 24; for collection throughout the town on Friday, Sept. 25.
• The regular monthly meeting of Avoca Borough Council will be on Thursday, Sept. 10 in the municipal building immediately after the 6:30 p.m. work session. The public is invited to attend.
