HAZLETON – Conyngham Mayor Conrad Wittig has been named the grand marshal for this year’s Funfest Parade.
“Funfest has always welcomed the elected officials who represent the people of the Hazleton area to be a part of the parade, but no one has been a more loyal participant than Mayor Wittig, who has ridden in the parade for all 20 of the years during which he served as Conyngham’s chief official. … The Funfest Committee felt that this would be a fitting tribute to him as he retires,” said Funfest Executive Director Judiann McGrogan.
Wittig did not run for re-election this year.
Wittig, 86, has served on the borough planning commission and borough council. As mayor, he rarely missed a community function and enjoyed performing weddings. He officiated at more than 100.
A 1942 graduate of Hazleton High School, he served in the U.S. Army, and was a sales manager at Sears Roebuck & Co. for 43 years before retiring. He moved to Conyngham in 1964.
The parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 in West Hazleton, traveling east into downtown Hazleton. Wittig and his wife, Kathy, will ride in a convertible near the head of the parade. Funfest weekend includes two days of activities and events in downtown Hazleton that begin Sept. 12.
