Joseph John Chek, 83, formerly of Nanticoke, died Sunday in Bethesda, Md.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a technical sergeant in the Pacific Theater. Later he was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve, following the completion of his baccalaureate.
He worked nearly 40 years for the Department of State as a department head until his retirement.
Mr. Chek was an active parishioner of St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Washington, D.C., for much of his life.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 22 S. Prospect St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Joseph’s Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA, 23058-5216.
