Michael R. Polizzi, 87, of Mountain Top, died Tuesday afternoon in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore. His wife, the former Loretta Golembeski, died on July 25, 2009.
Born and educated in Dunmore, a son of the late Salvatore and Laura Guimento Polizzi, he was a 1940 graduate of Dunmore High School.
Michael lived most of his adult life in Mountain Top and was a supervisor for the former American Cigar in Mountain Top for over 42 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, with the Amphibious Forces. He received commendation for his two night reconnaissance mission in July of 1944. Under heavy mortar, machine gun, and sniper fire, which killed and wounded several team mates, for three hours he calmly conducted thorough surveys to within 30 yards of the Saipan Island beaches.
He twice swam at night to the shore line on the defended and well-patrolled Tinian Island beaches, obtaining information of great value to the landing forces. He was a member of St Jude’s Catholic Church, Mountain Top.
Surviving are a son Mark Polizzi and wife, Ann, Inkerman, Pa.; two sisters, Sarah Polizzi and Angela Consagra, both of Dunmore; two granddaughters, Christina and Nissa Polizzi; several nieces and nephews.

uneral will be Saturday from the Thomas J. Golden Funeral Home, 2004 Delaware St., Dunmore, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street, Dunmore. Entombment, St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
