ROSS TWP. – Supervisors awarded contracts for two road projects and announced tire recycling programs at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Supervisors opened five sealed bids for resurfacing and work on two road shoulders extending about one and a half miles on Niemchik Road. Bids were received from HRI Construction, Bloomsburg, $235,974; Popple Construction, Laflin, $220,818; Slusser Brothers, Pittston, $218,884.70; American Asphalt, Shavertown, $217,338; and Pikes Creek, Sweet Valley, $198,246.40.
Pikes Creek was awarded the contract on Supervisor William Ferry Jr.’s motion provided all paperwork is in order.
Funds for the Niemchik Road resurfacing project were provided through the federal Community Development Grant, which allocated $280,000 for the extensive project, Secretary Terry Davis said.
Skurat Road will also be receiving some attention. About 1,000 feet will get paving repairs, said Supervisor David Williams.
Sealed bids for Skurat Road were received from HRI, $39,858; America Asphalt, $35,822.50; Slusser Brothers, $34,710; Popple Construction, $31,372.50; and Pikes Creek, $30,927.50.
Pikes Creek was awarded the contact after Ferry’s motion was approved.
Chairman Stanford Davis said the Skurat Road project was planned and budgeted for in the beginning of the year.
Also, supervisors announced two upcoming free, used tire recycling events sponsored by the Luzerne County Commissioners, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Luzerne County Solid Waste Management Department.
The events will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Butler Township Road Department in Drums and Oct. 10 at the Hanover Area Junior Senior High School in Hanover Township.
Tires from automobiles, motorcycles, pickups and SUVs must be removed from the rims and free of liquids and heavy mud. The tires cannot be cut. More information is available by calling 331-7049.
