Friday’s pro-am race to feature variety of events on downtown streets.
WILKES-BARRE – Phil Cable says Friday evening’s bicycle race will be a top-notch event, and he hopes plenty of people will turn out to watch.
Cable will host the Wilkes-Barre Pro-Am Twilight Criterium that will feature cyclists racing through downtown streets. The main event is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania has signed on as a sponsor and Jack Williams Tire is backing the youth races. The youth races will feature three age groups: 6 and under; 7 to 10; and 11 to 14.
The main event will be a 50-mile race through downtown Wilkes-Barre. Cash prizes will be awarded with a top payout $800. The start and finish will be on Public Square.
The Wilkes-Barre Police Department has announced road closures and traffic detours which will take effect on Friday at about 4:30 p.m. to accommodate the event. Traffic patterns will return to normal at around 9 p.m.
Road Closures/Detours/No Parking Areas – approximately 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. are as follows:
• Vehicles traveling across the Market Street Bridge from Kingston to Wilkes-Barre must turn left on to North River Street. Vehicles traveling southbound on North River Street must turn right onto the Market Street Bridge.
• Vehicles traveling northbound on South River Street must turn right onto West Ross Street.
• Vehicles traveling northbound on South Main Street must turn right onto East South Street. Vehicles traveling westbound on East South Street must turn left onto South Main Street.
• Officers will be stationed along South Franklin Street in the area of West Market Street to allow vehicles exiting South Franklin Street parking garages to leave the race course by continuing along North Franklin Street.
• Officers will be stationed along Northampton Street in the area of South Main Street to allow vehicles to park in the lot along Livingston Lane.
• Public Square will remain open to vehicular traffic from East Market Street to North Main Street, but all other legs will be closed. No parking will be allowed between West Market Street and South Main Street.
• Police suggest that motorists who wish to travel northbound through downtown Wilkes-Barre use the following route: travel north on South River Street, turn right on Ross Street, take Pennsylvania Avenue to Union Street or streets further north. (Detour signs will be posted.)
• Police suggest that motorists who wish to travel southbound through downtown Wilkes-Barre should use the following route: travel south on North River Street, turn left on North Street, take Pennsylvania Avenue to Ross Street or streets further south. (Detour signs will be posted.)
• Vehicles should be removed from parking meters located along the race course no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Signs will be posted.
• Sidewalks throughout the race course will remain open to pedestrian traffic.
