RALEIGH, N.C. — Brian Maddox had a short touchdown run while Stephen Garcia completed a key third-down pass in the final minutes to help South Carolina beat North Carolina State 7-3 on Thursday night.
Garcia threw for just 148 yards on a frustrating night for both offenses, but the sophomore came through with a 33-yard completion to Moe Brown that allowed the Gamecocks to run out the final 2 1/2 minutes. It gave South Carolina a second straight season-opening victory against the Wolfpack, who was shut out 34-0 in last year’s meeting and failed to reach the end zone in the rematch.
Maddox scored from 1 yard out in the first quarter and finished with 66 yards rushing.
The Wolfpack managed just 133 yards, with all-Atlantic Coast Conference quarterback Russell Wilson throwing for just 74 yards while under steady pressure from the speedy South Carolina defenders.
Bowling Green 31, Troy 14
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Tyler Sheehan threw two touchdown passes to help Bowling Green defeat Troy in the season opener for both teams.
Sheehan was 32 of 44 passing with one interception for the Falcons, and Freddie Barnes caught 15 passes for 157 yards and both of Sheehan’s touchdown passes.
The Falcons outgained the Trojans 394-293, helping new Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson notch a win in his debut.
SE Missouri 72, Quincy 3
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Matt Scheible threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Southeast Missouri to a victory over NAIA Quincy.
Scheible completed 11 of 18 passes for 222 yards for the Redhawks (1-0). Sam Donatucci passed for just 47 yards and threw two interceptions for Quincy (1-1).
Henry Harris led all rushers with 88 yards and three touchdowns and Walter Peoples had five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown for the Redhawks. Renard Celestin and Trey Porter also rushed for TDs, and Chantae Ahamefule scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass.
Kent St. 18, Coastal Carolina 0
KENT, Ohio — Uegene Jarvis ran for 141 yards and a touchdown to lead Kent State to a win.
Jarvis also returned five punts for 77 yards and caught three passes for 30 yards.
Villanova 27, Temple 24
PHILADELPHIA — Bill Cosby watched his Temple Owls blow a 10-point fourth-quarter lead in a loss to Villanova.
Nick Yako kicked a 32-yard field goal with no time remaining after a John Dempsey interception of Temple quarterback Vaughn Charlton with 49 seconds remaining.
