Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue performs at the Toyota Pavillion on Montage Mountain on Friday. WHO/WHAT: Crue Fest 2 WHEN/WHERE: 5 p.m. Friday at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain THE SHORT WORD: The traveling circus known as “Crue Fest 2” rolled into town Friday, providing six hours of bone-crunching hard rock from five bands in the tour’s next-to-last show. The long night of music got started with opening sets from Charm City Devils, Drowning Pool and Theory of a Deadman. Godsmack then revved up the crowd with a ferocious hour-long set before turning the stage over to headliner Motley Crue. The quartet from Los Angeles capped off the evening by playing its 1989 album “Dr. Feelgood” in its entirety and a handful of greatest hits. THE HIGHLIGHTS: Drowning Pool scored big with opener “Sinner,” latest singles “Shame” and “37 Stitches” and its closing number, “Bodies.” Theory of a Deadman followed with great performances of “Nothing Could Come Between Us,” “By The Way” and “Bad Girlfriend.” Godsmack delivered standout versions of “The Enemy,” “Speak” and closer “I Stand Alone.” Early highlights of Motley Crue’s set (which didn’t get under way until 9:20) included “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Without You” and “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away).” THE SURPRISES: Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee was back behind the drum kit for his band’s entire set after sitting out a number of shows due to a hand injury suffered in mid-August. FUN FACTS: “Dr. Feelgood” was Motley Crue’s fifth album and its first (and only to date) to reach No. 1. The album went on to sell 6 million copies and spawn five hit singles. The title track to the band’s latest album, 2008’s “Saints of Los Angeles,” was nominated for a Grammy award. The inaugural edition of “Crue Fest” played Montage Mountain on August 30, 2008, and that show was also the next-to-last of the tour. THE CROWD: The attendance figure was not available at press time. UP NEXT: “Crue Fest 2” wraps up tonight at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in Darien Lake, N.Y. Next show at Montage is 7:30 tonight as country stars Toby Keith and special guest Trace Adkins make the trek up the mountain. – Brad Patton
