County controller hopeful makes request in response to mismanagement allegations.

Bob Morgan, a Democratic candidate for Luzerne County controller, said Friday that he has faxed a letter to the controller’s office requesting a full audit of the county sheriff’s office.
Morgan said in a media release that he made the request in response to allegations of financial mismanagement made by Michael Savokinas, who abruptly resigned as sheriff on Tuesday.
Those allegations included claims of mismanagement in tax sale accounting.
“The allegations are of such gravity that an audit cannot be delayed until the election of a new controller,” Morgan said. “A full audit will either substantiate, or eliminate, the past charges made by former Sheriff Savokinas.”
Morgan said an audit could also end the “fingerpointing and blame game” in the sheriff’s office and restore public confidence in office operations.
Acting Controller A.J. Martinelli could not be reached for comment.
Morgan is running against Republican Walter Griffith and Independent Wil Toole in the November election.
