Township festivities kick off at 10 a.m. featuring bands, kid activities and demonstrations.
SUGARLOAF TWP. – Sugarloaf Township is celebrating its 200th birthday today with a slate of activities at the LaRock Recreation Complex.
And the U.S. Postal Service is helping to commemorate the occasion with a special pictorial postmark.
Opening ceremonies for the bicentennial celebration begin at 10 a.m., when the Valley veterans will present colors, Susan Marie Good will sing the national anthem and someone from Holy Dormition Monastery will recite an invocation.
There will be live bands performing throughout the day, as well as arts and crafts for children 5 through 12, a rock band contest, face painting, caricature, a fire safety house, a demonstration by Mountain Valley Family Martial Arts, a performance by the DeMelfi School of Music, a percussion workshop for kids by Ben Mike and a display of Casagrande/Mattern race cars.
Postal clerks from the Sybertsville Post Office will set up a temporary postal station at the complex to hand-cancel stamped letters and postcards with a special postmark depicting the Sugarloaf Mountain designed by Lisa Welch from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As a community service, the USPS offers such pictorial postmarks to commemorate local events celebrated in communities throughout the nation, said USPS communications specialist Mark Hnasko.
Customers who can’t attend today’s event but would like to get the postmark can submit a mail order request through Sept. 5. All requests must include a stamped envelope or postcard bearing at least the minimum First-Class Mail postage.
Customers should affix stamps to any envelope or postcard, address the envelope or postcard to themselves or others, insert a card of postcard thickness in envelopes for sturdiness and tuck in the flap. Place the envelope or postcard in a larger envelope and mail it to Postmaster, Sybertsville Post Office, 41 N. Main St., Sybertsville, PA 18251-9998.
Customers can also send stamped envelopes and postcards without addresses for postmark as long as they supply a larger envelope with adequate postage and their return address.
