George H. Norton, 86, of Brooks Estates, Pittston, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at the Hospice Community Care, Inpatient Unit, Dunmore, following a brief illness.
Born in Wilkes-Barre on April 24, 1923, George was a son of the late George S. and Anna Tredinnick Norton. He was a 1941 graduate of Meyers High School.
A World War II Navy veteran, George served as a drill and physical instructor at the Naval Air Facility 120.
He was employed as an insurance adjuster and investigator for workers’ compensation and the federal Black Lung division for 40 years, retiring as a claims manager in 1994.
A man who enjoyed sports, George played in several basketball leagues and played for the Wilkes-Barre Bullet Football Team.
He was also a PIAA swimming official for local high school and college teams for 16 years. He was also an avid bowler.
He was a member of the Landmark Lodge 442, F&AM Wilkes-Barre, Valley of Bloomsburg Consistory, and a former member of the Irem Temple Clowns.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Romayne Bowen Norton; daughter Cathy Norton, Hazleton; son Scott Norton and his companion, Jackie Fiorillo, Newton, N.J.; grandson Corey Norton; sisters Gladys Monto, Wilkes-Barre, and Marge Wilkes, Hatboro, Pa.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend George’s funeral service on Friday at noon from the Wroblewski Funeral Home Inc., 1442 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with the Rev. Henry Medd officiating. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. There will be a time of visitation with the family at the funeral home on Friday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
