WILKES-BARRE – The city is using $490, 716 in Community Development Block Grant funds to pave nine streets: Jones Street, Forrest Street, Smith Street, Anthracite Street, Meade Street, Noble Lane, Hancock Street, Cardiff Lane and Elder Street. The paving began Wednesday morning.
“This project will begin a series of paving projects that will greatly improve the condition of roadways in the city of Wilkes-Barre,” said Mayor Tom Leighton. “These projects will continue throughout the fall and more details on specific streets will be available in the coming weeks.”
Popple Construction Co. of Laflin will work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, completing milling and prep work on the streets prior to paving. The project is expected to take about three weeks.
The mayor also announced that the Wilkes-Barre City Health Department will distribute free carbon monoxide detectors to city residents during their seasonal flu drive-through clinic on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Kirby Health Center, 71 N. Franklin St.
Carbon monoxide, known as the “invisible killer” because it is an odorless, colorless gas, can cause sudden illness and even death.
One detector will be provided per household. For more information, call Susan Kennedy in the Health Department at 208-4268.
