Nicholas J. Episcopo, 87, of Berwick, concluded his journey in this life at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2011, in Berwick Retirement Village I.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Salvatore and Josephine Minera Episcopo, he graduated from a Brooklyn High School and then served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy.

He retired from the New York City Fire Department after 22 years. For the past five years Nicholas resided in Berwick, and prior to that he lived in Pond Hill for 20 years.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Berwick; a member of the Catholic War Vets, Glen Lyon; American Legion Post, and the Pocono Division of New York City Firefighter Retirees. He was also a former auditor for Conyngham Township.

Nicholas was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Michael and Salvatore Episcopo, and Grace.

Nicholas will be remembered by his wife of 54 years, the former Marietta Koas; four children, Richard Episcopo, Rochester, N.Y.; Collette Carras and husband Stephen, Minnesota; Christopher Episcopo and wife Pauline, Leesburg, Va.; and Donald Episcopo, Dillsburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren; brother, Joseph Episcopo, New Brunswick, N.J.; sister, Delia McDade, New Jersey; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Services have been entrusted to the care of the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, where a prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday, followed by a 10 a.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s R.C. Church, with the Very Rev. Francis J. Tamburro as celebrant. He will be laid to rest in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 3 p.m.
