Citizens must rise to challenge of government
The only way to have open, honest, check-and-balance, effective government is if we challenge the three branches of government.
Luzerne County government presumably was corrupt for so long that people seemingly were frightened to challenge the system. Even public employees delivering boxes of cash to judges apparently were intimidated, believing their jobs were at stake. The corruption continued like cancer through the three branches.
The residents of Luzerne County recently voted for home rule-style government, and it will have to be challenged at every level.
It’s very difficult to believe our neighbors – judges, commissioners, school board members, school administrators, business leaders – truly believed that bribery (or as the one judge has said, a finder’s fee) was part of the democratic process.
From among all those employees in the judicial branch and the commissioners’ office, apparently not one person challenged the abuse by certain government leaders.
Government is only as good as the people who challenge those who are elected to office. It’s not about those we elect; it’s about brave, civic-minded citizens who are willing at all costs to challenge corruption.
Philharmonic was music to the ears of this reader
I spent a fantastic evening last Saturday watching and listening to The Texas Tenors and The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, Wilkes-Barre.
The Tenors were exciting, fun and so talented! Music director Larry Loh appeared in cowboy shirt and hat, and led our wonderful orchestra through country, romance and opera – right with the Tenors.
We have such a gem. Let’s all do what we can so we don’t lose it.
