HAZLETON – Peter Alexis scored 38 points as Holy Redeemer defeated Hazleton Area 63-47 Friday night to clinch the overall title in Division II of Wyoming Valley Conference boys basketball.

Steve Ruch followed with 16 points for the Royals, who also locked up the WVC’s top seed in the District 2 Class 3A playoffs.

Tyler Plaksa led Hazleton Area with 14 points

Kai Smith scored 13 points as the Blue Knights defeated MMI Prep to clinch the WVC Division IV second-half title.

Josh Lefkowitz followed with nine points for the Blue Knights, who will play first-half champion Northwest next week for the Division IV overall championship.

For MMI, Ryan Forte netted a game-high 20 points.

Eugene Lewis poured in a game-high 23 points as Wyoming Valley West clinched a tie for the WVC Division I second-half title.

The Spartans can win the second-half and overall championships outright with a victory at Hazleton Area on Tuesday. If Hazleton Area wins, then they will be tied for the second-half title.

It could be a three-way tie if Crestwood defeats Coughlin on Tuesday.

James McCann tallied 17 points for the Spartans, while Jonathan Gimble netted 12 and Ryan Hoinski and Brett Good each scored 10.

Steve Stravinski tossed in 15 for the Patriots while Joe Coyne scored 11.
