Thomas J. Malys, 37, of Rice Township, Mountain Top, passed away Friday, February 11, 2011, in the hospice community care unit of Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by his loving family and close friends.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, a son-in-law of Miller J. and Diane Stella, who were his loving parental advisers, he was educated in Wilkes-Barre schools and was a graduate of GAR High School, class of 1994. He was formerly employed as a welder by American Asphalt Co., located in Chase.

Thomas was captain and vice president of the Rice Township Volunteer Fire Department and was well known as “Tanker Tommy.” He was also well-known to the children of Rice Township as Santa Claus, who he played even to this December, in spite of his illness.

Tommy enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father-in-law and daughter Emily. He was an AKC Field Trial Judge and was also a member of the Susquehanna Valley Beagle Club.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Joseph and Dorothy Catina; and grandfather Henry Malys.

Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Beth, with whom he would have celebrated his 14th wedding anniversary; daughters, Justina and Emily, at home; brothers, Matthew and his wife, Tina, and their daughters, Aleksa and Marissa of Carbondale, and Gerard of Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Desiderio Funeral Home Inc., 436 S. Mountain Blvd., State Route 309, Mountain Top, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s, Our Lady Help of Christians, Roman Catholic Church, Dorrance Township. Interment will be held in Albert Cemetery, Mountain Top. Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends are requested to assemble at St. Mary’s Church in Dorrance Township Monday morning for the funeral Mass. There will be no procession from the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Thomas J. Malys Cancer Fund, in care of The Cross Valley Federal Credit Union, 1130 S. Main Road, Mountain Top, PA 18707.
