Scholarship is among about 12 already offered to junior, highly regarded in ’12 class.

Lewis might play WR in college.

Penn State finally got serious in the recruiting pursuit of Wyoming Valley West football standout Eugene Lewis, offering the junior a scholarship Friday.

Several Web sites reported the offer from the Nittany Lions. Lewis confirmed it through a text message to lions247.com.

“I just got off the phone with Coach (Dick) Anderson and he confirmed to me that they have offered,” Lewis said via text message to lions247.com.

Lewis has about a dozen offers thus far, including South Carolina, Boston College, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Scout.com has rated Lewis as one of the top players in the country for the class of 2012, listing him a four-star prospect (out of five).

High school football players can only make verbal, non-binding commitments to schools until national signing day in February 2012. Schools can also rescind scholarship offers before then.

Lewis played quarterback this past season for Valley West. He completed 57 of 110 passes for 1,022 yards and eight touchdowns during the Wyoming Valley Conference regular season. He also rushed 193 times for 1,121 yards and 17 touchdowns, which were the second-most rushing TDs in the conference. He was also a standout defensive back for the Spartans.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, though, will likely play receiver at the collegiate level. As a sophomore, he caught 26 passes for 606 yards and eight touchdowns during the WVC season. He also rushed for 319 yards and threw three touchdown passes.

Lewis was named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class 4A all-state second team this past season. He was also named the WVC Coaches Big School Offensive Player of the Year and selected to The Times Leader All-WVC team for a second consecutive season.
