Dr. James F. Hora, 78, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at his home in Dallas surrounded by his family.
Born January 29, 1933, in Oak Park, Ill., he was a son of the late Frank and Estelle Hora. Dr. Hora received his Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude at Loyola University, Chicago. Ill., and his Medical Degree, cum laude at the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University. He served an internship, as well as a four-year residency, at Fitzimmons General Hospital, Denver, Colo. He completed his graduate study in Otolaryngology at the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Hora served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1965 attaining the rank of Major. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Board of Otolaryngology, American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society, American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, Society of Military Otolaryngologists, American Medical Association, Philadelphia Laryngologic Association, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.
Dr. Hora established the ENT Surgical Group, Kingston, where he practiced medicine for 24 years, retiring in 1993. Prior to that, he practiced medicine and held teaching appointments at Geisinger Medical Center and the University of Vermont, College of Medicine. He was attending Otolaryngologist at Wilkes-Barre General, Mercy and Nesbitt Hospitals and was a consultant for head and neck surgery at the VA Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. He authored numerous technical papers and publications pioneering several protocols for the treatment of head and neck cancer.
Surviving are his loving wife, the former Marguerite McGowan, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage, August 6, 2010; sons, Dr. James F. Hora and wife, Nancy, Wilkes-Barre, Terrance Hora and wife, Michele, Gouldsboro, Pa., and Kevin Hora, Dallas; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; as well as a brother, Edward Hora, Chicago, Ill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Therese’s Church, Pioneer Avenue at Davis Street, Shavertown. A private entombment will be made in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dr. Hora’s name to St. Therese’s Church, 64 Davis St., Shavertown, PA 18708.
