Banks

Haynesworth

RESTON, Va. — Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been formally charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a road rage encounter.

Fairfax County police say the 29-year-old Haynesworth and his attorney appeared at a police station Saturday morning. Haynesworth signed a summons warrant charging him with assault and left.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on March 31.

Police say a 38-year-old man told investigators he was assaulted by the driver of a pickup truck who was tailgating him on Feb. 2. The driver was later identified as Haynesworth.

Simple assault is punishable in Virginia by not more than a year in jail and a fine of $2,500 or less.

Redskins kick returner injured in D.C. stabbing

WASHINGTON — Washington Redskins kick returner Brandon Banks is one of two men who were injured in a stabbing outside a D.C. nightclub.

A Redskins spokesman confirmed that Banks was injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. He was admitted to a hospital in stable condition and remained hospitalized Saturday afternoon.

D.C. police say a man pulled a knife after a verbal argument and stabbed two men. Police did not release the names of the victims but say the other victim was hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect — identified as 24-year-old Jason Shorter of Lanham, Md. — was taken into custody. He’s been charged with assault with intent to kill.

Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie says the team is aware of the incident and is gathering all the facts.

Tennessee names defensive coordinator

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Titans coach Mike Munchak has filled one of the biggest openings on his staff by hiring Jerry Gray away from the University of Texas to become Tennessee’s defensive coordinator.

The Titans announced the move Saturday.

Gray was hired by Texas, his alma mater, to be defensive backs coach and assistant head coach to Mack Brown last month.

Gray flew into Nashville on Friday to interview for the job. He spent last season as secondary coach at Seattle.

He replaces Chuck Cecil, who was fired in January a week before the Titans parted with head coach Jeff Fisher.

This is Munchak’s second hiring since taking over on Monday.

Jaguars hire new QB coach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars have their third quarterbacks coach in less than a month.

The Jaguars hired Cincinnati’s Mike Sheppard to replace Todd Monken, who returned to college football earlier this week as Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator.

Jacksonville promoted Monken to quarterbacks coach in January, after Mike Shula took the same position with the Carolina Panthers.

Sheppard, who has 17 years of coaching experience in the National Football League, spent the last four seasons coaching receivers for the Bengals. His resume also includes college head-coaching stints (Long Beach State and New Mexico), as well as NFL coordinator jobs with San Diego (1997-98), Buffalo (2001) and New Orleans (2005).
