LAKEVILLE — Authorities say two people are dead after the snowmobile they were riding hit a tree.

State police at Honesdale said the accident happened around 3:15 a.m. Sunday on an island in a frozen lake in Paupack Township.

Joseph P. Jones, 43, and 40-year-old Jeanine Maxson, both of Lake Ariel, were killed.

Wayne County Coroner Carol Linert said that the accident happened just after the snowmobile had left the frozen lake and gone onto the island.

She said both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not say who was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash.
