Here’s how the 15 District 2 wrestlers fared during the first day of the PIAA Championships at Giant Center in Hershey
CLASS 2A
•Vito Pasone, Meyers (112): The junior defeated Ligonier Valley’s Joshua Patrick, 7-4 to move on to today’s quarterfinals. Up next: Jamestown senior Tyler Roberts (38-5).
•Austin Harry, Lake-Lehman (119): Harry, a freshman, lost his preliminary round match to Shady Side Academy’s Phillip Elias, 9-4 to fall into the consolation bracket. He then faced Robert Ritschard, from Oley Valley and won 6-5 to remain alive in the event. Up next: in the second round of consolations he will face the loser of the quarterfinal match between Benton’s Colt Cotten and Wilson’s Michael Fleck.
•Casey Fuller, Western Wayne (160): He pinned Bermudian Springs’ Tyler Fitzkee in 5:42. Up next: Defending state champion, Charleroi’s Cody Wiercioch (37-2).
•Eric Laytos, Lackawanna Trail (215): The defending state champion pinned Bethlehem Catholic’s Josh Alpha in 4:28. Up next: Northern Bedford senior Joel Suter (25-1) in the quarterfinals.
CLASS 3A
•Michael Domarasky, Pittston Area (112): The senior dropped a 3-0 decision to New Oxford’s Jordan Conaway in the preliminaries. He fell into the consolation bracket and then came back to beat Clearfield freshman Christian Stone, 13-6 in the first round of consolations. Up next: Either Godwin Nyama (32-2) from Brashear or Hempfield’s Austin Miller (38-3).
•C.J. Palmer, Delaware Valley (119): Palmer (46-2) knocked off Westmont Hilltop senior Josh Polacek, 5-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Up next: Mackenzie McGuire (32-2) from Upper St. Clair.
•Matt Ritz, Crestwood (140): The senior lost to Jake Schultz from Lewistown, 6-0 in the preliminaries. He dropped to the loser’s bracket and lost to Council Rock South’s Matt Martoccio and was eliminated.
•Tim Samec, Hazleton Area (152): He was defeated by Mechanicsburg’s Rustin Barrick, 7-0 in the first round and fell into the consolations. In the first round of consolations, he beat Owen J. Roberts’ Jordan Moser, 5-4. Up next: Either Northampton’s John Lambert or DuBois’ Geno Morelli.
•James Fruehan, Abington Heights (152): The Comet was pinned in 2:43 by Kennard-Dale freshman Chance Marsteller to drop into the loser’s bracket. In the consolations, he was eliminated with a 5-1 loss to Thomas Demetrio from Pottsgrove.
•Marc Wagner, Delaware Valley (160): He dropped a 5-1 decision to Bellefonte’s Bradley Grieb. In the loser’s bracket, he was eliminated by Rich Jasinski, 4-1, from Pennridge.
•Chad Hoffman, Hazleton Area (171): Hoffman, a junior, lost via major decision to Nick Bonaccorsi from Bethel Park, 13-4. In the consolation round, he bounced back to beat Clearfield’s Derek Danver, 9-4. Up next: Either Cedar Cliff’s Grant Dickey or Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Austin Coniker.
•Mike Mirra, Crestwood (189): He defeated Corry’s Nash Walters, 2-1 in the preliminaries to advance to today’s quarters, where he will see Upper Moreland’s John Bolich (38-0).
•Josh Popple, Coughlin (189): Popple (42-0) won via fall in 4:40 over Lower Dauphin’s Kyle Stauffer in the opening round. He advances to take on Harriton’s Haddon Corbett (42-2) in the quarterfinals.
•Jason Laboranti, Pittston Area (215): The senior was knocked off by Souderton’s Joe Stolfi, 14-2 in the first round to drop into the consolation bracket. He then beat Red Lion’s David Quackenbos, 4-3 to stay alive. Up next: The loser of the match between Parkland’s Tarek Haddad and Greater Latrobe’s Scott Mohring.
•Morgan Craig, Abington Heights (285): Beat Westmont Hilltop junior Josh Duplin, 3-1 in the preliminaries to improve his record to (28-4) and advance to today’s quarterfinals where he will face Canon-McMillan’s Cody Klempay (43-0).
