Peter J. Muzyka, 91, of Bald Mountain Road, Bear Creek Township, died Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Timber Ridge Health Care Center, Plains Township.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Martin J. and Mary Bigosh Muzyka. Peter was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a former coal miner.

He was a skillful fisherman, hunter and gardener. He was a hard-working man who was known as “Pocono Pete” and the “Mad Russian.” Peter was a member of St. Christopher Church, Bear Creek, and VFW Post 837, Wilkes-Barre.

Peter was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Joseph, and Martin; and sister, Mary.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Kopchak Muzyka; daughters, Pola Marie Muzyka, Waleska, Ga., and Patrice Marie Stradnick, Nanticoke; sons, Peter Martin Muzyka, Madison, Ga., and Paul Martin Muzyka, Bear Creek; as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service and Military Rite will be held at 9 a.m. Monday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Township, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Savior Church, Hilliard Street, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
