JACKSON TWP. – Hillside Road looked more like Hillside stream Friday morning as water from the adjacent creek flowed over a bridge downstream from the Farmers Inn.
The transformation came after heavy rain combined with quickly melting snow to swell the Huntsville Reservoir. Water overflowed the spillway and flooded some houses and covered roads.
Dump trucks were positioned to block traffic from entering Hillside Road from the intersection with Huntsville Road to the corner of Chase Road.
Hillside Road resident, Charles Norris, 46, said such flooding happens frequently. He said the bridge was fixed after the flooding of 2006, but the channel under the span is sometimes blocked with debris and the water backs up and flows over the road, into his yard and basement.
Norris said his basement was filled with water and he was prepared to place sandbags at his doors if the water rose higher.
On the other side of the bridge, Hillside Road resident Robert Spencer, 36, was shoveling stone into his wheelbarrow to make little mounds to divert the water away from his home and neighbors.
Spencer opened his basement door to reveal 8 inches of water. He said it is not as bad as in 2006, when the creek behind his house flooded his back yard and completely filled his basement.
