The Lindhill Institute, Shavertown, in cooperation with Wyoming Seminary Upper School, will present ‘Rally to the Cause,’ a 150th anniversary commemoration of the beginning of the Civil War, at 7 a.m. Tuesday on the school’s back campus green on Maple Avenue, Kingston. The 30-minute commemoration program is free and open to the public. This event will be held rain or shine at the exact hour when federal troops in Fort Sumter, S.C., returned fire upon the Confederates at Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861. It will include a ceremonial cannon-firing, Civil War re-enactors and three speakers who will examine the opening battle, the major participants in the battle and the connection between the war and Wyoming Seminary. Speakers include Fred Walters, director, Lindhill Institute; Kip Nygren, president, Wyoming Seminary, Brig. Gen. of the U.S. Army (Ret.) and West Point graduate; and David Callahan, Lindhill Institute member who will portray Maj. Robert Anderson who was the commander of Fort Sumter when the battle began. This event is the first in a trilogy of historical programs commemorating the Civil War’s anniversary. The second, ‘Trial of the Lincoln Conspirators,’ a dramatic recreation, will be held in Gettysburg on June 1 -1 and a third program will be held at the Philadelphia City Hall in late summer. The Lindhill Institute is a volunteer organization that produces public historical programs across the state.
