Students from St. Nicholas-St. Mary School, Wilkes-Barre, under the direction of Janine Halchak, recently placed first in the National History Day competition held at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. The theme of the competition was ‘Debate and Diplomacy in History: Success, Failures, and Consequences.’ The students’ piece was entitled ‘The Olive Branch Petition: Failed Diplomacy, Consequence: War’ and demonstrated the actions of John Dickinson in trying to prevent the United States from going to war with Britain by writing and urging others to sign the Olive Branch Petition. The students will compete in the regional competition to be held May 1 1-12 at Millersville University.
